Shopify Store Setup in Saudi Arabia: Complete Guide

Shopify store setup Saudi Arabia

Why Shopify in Saudi Arabia?

Shopify is the world's most popular e-commerce platform — and while Salla and Zid dominate among Saudi-only merchants, Shopify is the stronger choice when you plan to sell beyond the Kingdom: to the UAE, Kuwait, or internationally. It has the largest app ecosystem, the most polished themes, and payment options that work across borders. Here's how to set up a Shopify store in Saudi Arabia correctly in 2026.

1. Create Your Shopify Account

Sign up at Shopify's website and start with the free trial. Choose the plan that matches your stage:

  • Basic — right for most new stores starting out.
  • Grow / Advanced — upgrade when order volume or international sales justify it.

Use a proper business email (not a personal one) from day one — it becomes your store's identity everywhere.

2. Set Saudi Arabia as Your Store Location

In Settings → General, set your store address to Saudi Arabia and your currency to Saudi Riyal (SAR). This affects checkout prices, tax calculations, and how shipping zones behave. Get this right before your first sale — changing currency later is messy.

3. Connect a Payment Gateway (Important for Saudi)

Shopify Payments is not available in Saudi Arabia, so you'll connect a third-party gateway. The common, reliable options for Saudi merchants are:

  • Tap Payments — supports mada, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and KNET.
  • PayTabs — another solid regional gateway with mada support.
  • Stripe — works if you have a registered business entity in a supported setup.

mada support is non-negotiable for a Saudi store — most customers pay with their mada debit cards. Also enable cash on delivery at launch if your courier supports it; many first-time Saudi online shoppers still prefer it.

4. Pick a Theme That Handles Arabic

If you'll sell in Arabic, your theme must support right-to-left (RTL) layouts. Many free Shopify themes do — but test before committing:

  • Switch the store language to Arabic and check that menus, product pages, and checkout all mirror correctly.
  • Keep navigation simple: Home, Shop by Category, Offers, Contact.
  • Use large product photos; most Saudi shoppers buy from their phones, so check every page on mobile.

5. Add Products the Saudi Way

Product pages win or lose the sale. For each product:

  • Write titles and descriptions in Arabic and English (Shopify Markets or a translation app handles the switch).
  • Add multiple clear photos — including lifestyle shots, not just white-background images.
  • Show prices in SAR with VAT (15%) included or clearly noted.
  • Add size guides, materials, and realistic delivery times — these cut returns dramatically.

6. Set Up Shipping for the Kingdom

In Settings → Shipping, create zones for:

  • Saudi Arabia — partner with SMSA, Aramex, or Zajil; offer standard and express options.
  • GCC — UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman.
  • International — if you plan to go global.

Publish a clear shipping policy page: costs, delivery times per city, and who pays for returns. Ambiguity here is the top reason carts get abandoned.

7. Install the Essentials (Nothing More)

Shopify's app store is huge — install only what you need:

  • A translation app (if running Arabic + English).
  • An SEO app for meta titles and sitemaps.
  • WhatsApp chat button — Saudi customers will message you before they buy. See our guide on setting up WhatsApp Business.
  • Abandoned-cart recovery emails.

Every extra app slows your store down. Read our guide on website speed mistakes before installing anything decorative.

8. Shopify vs Salla vs Zid — Which Should You Choose?

A quick honest comparison:

  • Salla: built for Saudi, easiest Arabic setup, local payment integrations out of the box. Best for Saudi-only sellers. See our Salla setup guide.
  • Zid: also Saudi-built, strong local features and shipping integrations. See our Zid setup guide.
  • Shopify: best app ecosystem and international reach; needs a bit more setup for Saudi specifics (payments, RTL).

Selling only in Saudi? Salla or Zid may get you live faster. Planning GCC or global expansion? Shopify's flexibility pays off.

Launch Checklist

  • Test checkout end-to-end with a real mada card (then refund it).
  • Check the store on a phone — Arabic and English.
  • Write your About, Shipping, Returns, and Contact pages.
  • Set up Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
  • Announce on Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat — where Saudi shoppers actually are.
